OM TOLLAREN

Bland de vildaste man kan få på fyra ben, skulle jag spontant vilja uttrycka det… Tanken när man faller för den röda, lilla söta hunden är att man får en ullig, gullig hund för kel och sällskap. Inget kan vara mer fel..

Tollaren är en fantastisk sällskapshund under rätt förutsättningar dvs att både kroppen och hjärnan har fått mycket, rätt och varierad stimulans. Det är en mycket aktiv hund som lätt kan tråkas ut om inte hundägaren är mycket påhittig. En tollare lär sig både bra och dåliga saker mycket fort, vilket också gör att en tollarägare till påhittigheten måste lägga egenskaper som konsekvens och förmågan att vara både barsk och extra rolig när så krävs. Tollaren är vår minsta retrieverras, men att låta sig luras av storleken är att göra både sig själv och hunden en otjänst.

Tollaren eller mer korrekt Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever härstammar från området Nova Scotia i Canada. Duck Tolling hänvisar till tollarens egenskap att tolla/locka in fåglar inom räckhåll för jägarnas bössor. Detta är en mycket speciell egenskap, som skulle kunna tränas hos flera hundar, men tollaren har en lång historia bakom sig för just denna egenskap.

Till Sverige kom tollaren 1984 genom importen Ardunacres Sandy Wonderful. Rasen har genom åren utvecklats stadigt, och Sverige innehar faktisk idag flest tollare i världen, Canada inräknat. I genomsnitt/år registreras ca 350-400 nya tollarvalpar.

Att äga en tollare innebär i vårt tycke en skyldighet att värna om dess ursprungliga egenskaper. Tollaren är ursprungligen en jakthund med apporterande egenskaper – dessa anor går så långt tillbaks som till 1600-talet. Denna hund är fantastiskt allround och skördar framgångar inom lydnad, bruks och på agilitybanan, men det är inom jaktgrenarna som tollaren verkligen kommer till sin rätt. Att se glädjen hos en tollare som t ex kastar sig ut i vattnet för att hämta in en fågel, kan inte jämföras på något sätt.

Många tollarägare blir osäkra inför viltträning, och renodlar hundarna inom andra områden, men med rätt hjälp kan alla få möjlighet att åtminstone i träningen lägga in övningar för att bibehålla och gärna öka viltspontaniteten och apporteringslusten. Man behöver inte bli en jägare för att träna hundens naturliga egenskaper.

The toller is an amazing social dog under the right circumstances. You need to make sure that the dog’s body and brain receives the correct and right amount of stimulation. The breed is very active and they can easily be bored if the owner doesn’t occupy them enough. A toller will learn both good and bad habits very quickly so it is important for the owner to not only be inventive, but also be consequent and use the ability to be both stern and extra funny when necessary. The toller is the smallest retriever breed, but don’t let the size fool you. It still needs proper stimulation.

The toller, or more correctly the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, is originates from Nova Scotia in Canada. Tolling refers to the ability to toll birds closer to the waterside and within reach of the hunter’s gun. This is a very special skill that can be trained with more breeds, but that tollers are especially good at all through its long history.

The toller arrived 1984 to Sweden through import of Ardunacres Sandy Wonderful. The race has developed steadily through the years and Sweden now has the highest population of tollers in the world, even with Canada included. Average each year is 350-400 new toller puppies.

According to us, owning a toller includes protecting the breed’s natural skills. It is originate a dog used for hunting with good retrieving skills. These skills go all the way back to the 17th century. This dog is a very all round type of dog and has had huge success in obedience, working dogs and agility. The best area for these dogs however is in hunting where the tollers really excel. To see the happiness of a toller who throws itself into water to fetch a bird is wonderful beyond words.

Many toller trainers feel insecure about training their dogs in hunting and prefer to train their dogs in other areas, but it is still important to include exercises in the dogs training that keeps the spontaneity and strong urge for retrieving. You do not need to hunt to bring forth the natural skills of these dogs.
